Barbara, "Barb, crocheted for a lot of her adult life before she had a stroke in 1993. She crocheted herself a sweater and would often make potholders and other small pieces to give as Christmas gifts to her children’s teachers and the women she worked with. She enjoyed crocheting a lot, and made all of her children afghans, which are small blankets. Her favorite things to make, though, were baby hats and layettes to give to people who had just had a baby. Barb has two sons and two twin daughters, and while raising them was “a lot of work, but a lot of fun,” she thinks that the work she put into crocheting was an artform of sorts and allowed her to give handmade things to others, which made her happy.
This is a picture of an artwork that Barb made recently. She confessed to never doing much art besides crocheting, but enjoyed this art activity because “it was challenging.” Titled "Tree of Life", Barb made this piece by gluing buttons and yarns down onto the lines that had been drawn on the canvas. She said, “I only have one hand, I can’t use my left side so it was quite challenging.” Even though it was challenging, Barb is proud of herself for making this artwork.

“Now that I learned how to do art,
I enjoy it.”
